MEET THE AUTHOR

Jessica Johnson Glover is an author, speaker, mental health advocate, and Realtor. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Clark Atlanta University.

After almost twenty years of living successfully with a mental illness, Jessica realized she possessed the skills and knowledge to help people who silently suffer from mental illnesses. Purposely, Jessica established and founded The Success In Sanity Society (SISS), an accountability tribe for those who are unashamed and ready to successfully maintain their sanity. In this community, Jessica conducts monthly virtual meetings that help individuals successfully manage mental illness and live the lives of their dreams. With the assistance of the SISS network professionals, Jessica, and her team offer expertise, resources, and skills that are needed to not only be successful BUT maintain mental wellness.

Jessica is married to her soulmate, Gerald L. Glover, a mortgage professional. They reside in sunny Jacksonville, Florida. Her moments of purposeful self-care include: spending time with her family and friends, listening to gospel music, getting pampered, and binge-watching some of her favorite television shows with her husband.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The first time Jessica Johnson Glover snapped, she walked outside naked with her Gucci bag and African cane. Her sanity left temporarily. However, after spending time in mental health hospitals, Jessica came to terms with her mental illness, and accepted the help and support she needed to win and rise to the top.

However, taking control of her mental health wasn’t without determination, a proper diagnosis/treatment, and unyielding faith in God. Today, Jessica is insanely successful – personally and professionally, and she is a champion for those living with mental illness.

Jessica believes that by taking the correct medication-as prescribed- and practicing a balanced lifestyle, those battling mental illness can experience true freedom and live a life that’s far from crazy.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

  1. Why did you write this book/What was the inspiration behind this book?

I wrote this book because I wanted to share my story about my personal journey to mental wellness. I know that there are millions of people silently suffering from various mental illnesses with nowhere to turn. I wanted to tell my story in full transparency because I feel that truth is missing when it comes to accurate depictions of what having a mental breakdown entails. For centuries, our society has hidden the truth about mental illness. There is a great stigma placed on those suffering from mental illnesses.  I shared my journey to mental wellness so that future generations now have a guidepost allowing them to seek help through acceptance, medication, and therapy.

  1. What makes this book different from other books?

This book is different because it gives an accurate depiction of my personal journey from mental illness to mental wellness. I share accounts from two mental breaks. The raw, uncut details are given because I want those that are suffering from similar issues to recognize that they are not alone. I also share how I was able to overcome the darkest moments of my life with family support, acceptance, medication, and therapy. The book displays the success I have found in my marriage and business despite living with Bipolar Disorder. I want to be an inspiration to others facing similar challenges. I want others to know that being diagnosed with a mental illness does not have to be a death sentence.

  1. What’s the hardest part about being an author?

The hardest part about being an author is walking in full transparency and not being concerned about how others are going to react to your truth. I have learned that my story and my message will reach those it was intended to reach. There are people waiting for me and my message. I cannot be concerned with those that are not.

4 What do you love most about being an author?

I love being an author because I feel that writing a book is similar to giving birth. Although I am not a mother, my book was created from an idea that is now on the earth and will live on long after I am gone. Future generations will get to know me and my journey through this work. My prayer is that if they see any form of mental illness manifest in their lives, this book will help them navigate their journey to mental wellness.

  1. Who is your favorite author/what is your favorite book and why?

My favorite author is the late Maya Angelou. I grew up reading her work and reciting her poetry in Black History Month programs at church with one of my sisters. I even got a chance to meet her when she was on a book tour in Jacksonville FL in the early 1990s. I love how she was so clear and confident with her word choice. As a little black girl who loved poetry and reading, she epitomized what a Phenomenal Woman represented.

  1. What advice would you give aspiring authors?

I would implore aspiring authors to GET STARTED! When I was an aspiring author, I overthought the process of writing a book. Since I have completed the book, I now know that it is much easier than I thought. Find a publishing company or publishing mentor to assist you with the process and get your book completed. The world is awaiting your work and message.

  1. What question or comment are you asked most frequently about your book?

I am most frequently asked how it feels to finally have my first book published. I simply respond, that it feels rewarding! To finally have my story written in a book that can be accessed anywhere books are sold is a dream come true!

  1. What events/book plans do you have coming up?

I am currently working on building my personal brand surrounding becoming a mental health advocate. I am also working on my signature talk, so that I can share my story with organizations and mental health professionals all over the world, from a patient perspective.  I also have other projects that I am working on to help others navigate the journey to finding mental wellness.
